Refroidisseurs magnétiques rotatifs et leur évaluation.

Rotary magnetic chillers and their assessment.

Résumé

This study is focused on the application of rotary magnetic liquid chillers and their assessment. For this purpose, a best possible design and a comprehensive analysis of the energy performance was made. The investigation was completed by an economic comparison with the existing conventional technology. Two different kind of magnetic chillers were investigated, such with permanent magnet assemblies and such that apply superconducting magnets, respectively. The results show clear limits of the size of permanent magnets of large scale magnetic chillers. Existing magnetocaloric materials do not have yet a good manufacturability. Therefore, different porous structures were considered and evaluated. The influence of such structures on the chillers characteristics is outlined. In the calculations two different working fluids were assumed, namely a 20% ethanol-water solution and a liquid metal based on the elements indium and gallium. A comparison between chillers, applying the two different fluids, was made and the difference in operation characteristics is discussed. For the magnetocaloric materials available today, the second shows a much better performance. The article has instructive sections for an optimal design of magnetic chillers. Furthermore, it shows their market potential.
