Sélection de fluides actifs pour l’étage de haute température d’un système frigorifique à ultra-basse température.

Working fluid selection for the high-temperature stage of an ultra low temperature refrigeration system.

Résumé

Ultra-low temperature (ULT) refrigeration systems down to −86 °C are based on two-stage cascades combining a pair of refrigerants with a specific pressure-temperature relationship and adequate thermophysical properties at the targeted operational temperature. Most systems are now based on high global warming potential (GWP) R404A-R23 refrigerants (high- and low-stage, respectively), and they need to be replaced with lower GWP alternatives. Previous works have explored environmentally friendly alternatives for the low-temperature stage; therefore, this paper provides insight into the alternatives for the high-temperature stage to replace R404A as drop-in replacements and for new design systems. The comparison of green refrigerants considers thermophysical, operational, safety, economic, and environmental perspectives. Also, it focuses on maximizing the application's energy performance by optimizing the intermediate temperature stage. The results indicate that existing refrigerants are an adequate option for high-energy performance but can be increased through refrigerant mixture tunning.
