Résumé

Boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion (BLEVE) occurs when there is a sudden loss of containment of a pressure vessel containing a superheated liquid or a liquefied gas, such as R290. When R290 in a vessel is depressurized rapidly, it becomes highly superheated, and the liquid vaporizes violently, causing the pressure to increase dramatically. The approach for predicting homogeneous nucleation rate in superheated liquids according to the probability distribution of energy fluctuation is used. The pressure decrease and re-increase process is simulated by combining a bubble growth and collapse model and a model for the dynamic process of vapor space. A case study is given to illuminate the pressure change processes during sudden release of the R290 tank. The influences of initial temperature, crack diameter, initial liquid level, tank volume and purity of R290 on the vapor explosion thermal processes are then discussed.
