Résumé

This article deals with energy consumption in supermarkets. Compressors consume 30% of the total energy. The author compares various refrigerants and states that R404A is one of the best substitutes for R502. He also calculates the energy consumption of three types of low-temperature compressors (evaporation temperature: -30 °C) under the same operating conditions. The comparative advantages of the scroll compressor are: fewer on-off cycles and higher total energy savings. Regarding refrigerated cabinets, the author has observed that the relative humidity in supermarkets is generally around 55-50%, which is optimum for the comfort of customers but too high for refrigerated cabinets; this results in an additional refrigerating load due to air dehumidifying ("forced dehumidification"). The author recommends that relative humidity should be about 40% around the refrigerated cabinets, in order to save energy. J.G.
