Résumé

The article describes the feasibility of applying transcritical CO2 heat pumps for combined heating and cooling in the food industry. While transcritical heat pumps for domestic and automotive applications have been widely analysed, the developments within industrial CO2 technology have so far focused on sub-critical cycles. The authors predict that the adaptation of findings in the domestic area will have a large potential in food factories with a simultaneous need for heating and cooling. With an optimum design of the gas cooler pressure control, the gas cooler exit temperature, an internal suction gas heat exchange and the utilisation of the work of expansion a heat pump, a COP between 3 and 5 can be obtained for hot water production at 80 °C when the evaporation temperature is between 0 and 20 °C. The potential is illustrated through calculated savings provided by a transcritical heat pump in the pasteurisation of e.g. milk and beverages.
