High-field high-temperature superconductor magnet technology and applications.

Résumé

A review of the status of development in high-field applications of high-temperature superconductors is presented. These magnet systems operate at liquid helium temperatures in a background field supplied by a magnet using low-temperature superconducting materials, niobium-titanium and niobium-tin. By this method, the high-temperature superconductor magnet takes greatest advantage of the high upper critical field properties of the material, usually a composite of silver and BSCCO. The near-term application for this technology is in high-field NMR spectrometer magnets; however, longer term, one could expect these systems to be used in high-energy physics, energy storage and fusion magnet systems.
