Résumé

The evolution of refrigerant usage in the HVAC&R industry is instructive in understanding the issues and consequences of the use of a wide variety of chemicals. This history is traced from the early stages of the industry to current day practice with emphasis on major milestones and enduring qualities. Safety and regulation were among the earliest issues to be resolved as the industry began to consolidate. From this era, the fluorinated refrigerants emerged and assumed a dominant position. Energy consumption became the top issue following the oil embargo of the early 1970s, but for economic reasons rather than environmental. Then on an incremental basis environmental issues came to the fore. Ozone depletion was addressed by the Montreal Protocol in the late 1980s, and global warming by the Kyoto Protocol in the 1990s. The range of fluorinated refrigerants from CFCs to HFCs are now regulated or under attack. Only now are we taking a more integrated view and assessment of refrigerant alternatives available to the industry. The paper takes a holistic approach to refrigerant selection from among a range of alternatives, considering the environmental criteria as well as a number of other factors. The objective is to shed new light on the path forward in a rational way.
