Résumé

Heat Pumps are recognized as a key technology to enable energy consumption reduction and the electrification of heating in residential buildings. For HPs to satisfy the additional requirements of building renovation, Low GWP, mildly flammable HFO based refrigerants have been developed, allowing to expand the operating temperature range and retro-compatibility with existing water-loop based heating systems. As a simple and economical replacement of fossil fuel boilers, allowing enhanced energy efficiency with Low GWP refrigerants, this technology is particularly promising for buildings renovation at a national and European level. This study compares performance, energy efficiency and total equivalent CO2 emissions for multiple Low GWP Refrigerants, as R-454B and R-454C, in extended range HP applications. HFO Low GWP refrigerants R-454B and R-454C appear to be the most suitable for extended temperature range HPs, while also fulfilling long term requirements of the F-Gas Regulation EU No 517/2014 and the European Green Deal principles and objectives.
