Résumé

Today, a growing segment of the transport refrigeration sector is using small trucks and vans, also known as light commercial vehicles (LCVs), which offer exceptional utility and versatility for deliveries. New refrigeration system technologies designed specifically for this segment are providing environmental benefits as well as profitability advantages for the businesses that take advantage of them. Some of today’s LCV refrigeration systems share similarities to contemporary mobile air conditioning technologies, where open-drive compressors are directly powered by the vehicle’s engine belt. From the environmental perspective, the EU’s Fluorinated Gas Regulation EC/842/2006 has contributed to reducing HFC emissions in the EU, but in order to meet the EU’s ambitious greenhouse gas emission targets of 2030 and beyond, additional progress is necessary. Although transport refrigeration (marine, truck and trailer, vans) is not currently restricted by the EU F-Gas Regulation, most of the Refrigeration unit manufacturers support its inclusion in a revised EU F-Gas Regulation. Technological progress has been made in the transport refrigeration sector with non-fluorinated refrigerant solutions that can be expected to meet the ambitious European F-Gas goals by 2025 for transport refrigeration applications. We have already developed breakthrough technology using CO2 for transport refrigeration systems. In this context, we believe that any potential intermediate non-natural refrigerant solution would be damaging for the environment, costly to develop and unnecessary.
