Résumé

The application of cool storage (commonly referred to as TES or thermal energy storage) has evolved into an economical building system technology primarily due to gains in reduced first cost. This makes TES compatible with non-storage systems based strictly on first cost. One of the economical costs means of achieving lower first costs is to combine TES with cold air distribution. This not only reduces the HVAC system first costs, but has economic substantial first cost benefits related to other building components. This is especially true for high-rise buildings. The benefits related to a specific 20 story office building in the State of Washington is used as an example in the paper.
