Résumé

Heat pumps have become a key technology for decarbonizing residential heating, using vapour compression systems with natural refrigerants such as propane (R290) or carbon dioxide (R744). Both fluids have inherent problems such as flammability (R290) or low cycle efficiency (R744). To solve this problem, this communication combines both fluids, searching for a mixture of R744/R290 to optimize the COP of a two-stage vapour compression heat pump system designed for pure CO2. The plant was tested with five mass fractions of R290, fixing the evaporator and condenser/gas-cooler inlet temperatures to -20°C and 10°C, respectively, simulating a typical tap water inlet temperature. Varying the heat-rejecting pressure, the plant was optimized, resulting in a COP improvement of 5.6% with an R290 mass fraction of 12%. To extend the study, the plant was tested again with a condenser/gas-cooler inlet temperature of 40°C for radiant floor heating. The new results provided COP enhancements of 9.7%.
