Résumé

Air conditioning systems are being deployed at a very faster rate mostly in the developing countries like India. This poses threat to environment, due to refrigerant leakages associated with it. Here lies the potential in refrigeration and air condition systems to use natural refrigerants. Among the natural refrigerants, carbon dioxide (CO2) possess environmental and thermophysical advantages. But, due to CO2's higher working pressure and lower critical temperature, the system functions in the transcritical region, at higher ambient temperatures. This results in substantial throttling losses. This paper proposes sub-cooling of the transcritical CO2 refrigeration system using the dedicated dew point evaporative cooling. The overall performance of the system is computed and compared with mechanical sub-cooled system. A parametric study is carried out to study the effect of the sub-cooling on the performance parameters. Results shows that dew point evaporative cooling assisted CO2 refrigeration system has 55% more COP than compared to the base case COP of CO2 system.
