Résumé

Refrigeration plays a crucial role in preserving perishable food items in millions of households. However, its widespread use contributes significantly to electricity consumption and carbon emissions. According to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), India’s refrigeration sector consumed 67 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity and generated 57 MtCO2 emissions in 20171. It is expected that by 2027-28, the sales of domestic refrigerators will increase by 1.7 times, while the commercial refrigeration sector is poised for a 2-fold growth, leading to a surge in energy consumption. Energy efficiency policies and measures are expected to mitigate this trend, with projected energy savings of up to 30% in the next two decades due to technological advancement, improved servicing practices, and enhanced insulation of refrigerators2. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of India's energy efficiency policies for domestic and commercial refrigerators since 2006 and the socio-economic benefits of using energy-efficient models. It also delves into BEE’s Standard and Labeling (S&L) program’s achievements, and avenues for further improvements in energy efficiency and sustainability in the refrigeration sector.
