Résumé

The Copenhagen "meat village" was built in 1934-36 to replace the "Brown meat village". At that time live-stock was slaughtered there. It included slaughterhouse and large halls for live animals as well as cutting and preparing facilities. There was from the start a great need for refrigeration and deep-freeze facilities. The installation included freezing tunnels and 160 chill rooms connected to a central ammonia refrigeration plant. In 1976 the 4 one-cylinder horizontal compressors were replaced by 3 screw compressors. Problems with ammonia pumps, valves and pipes became urgent in 1991 and press releases warned of a "bomb under the West Bridge" and "300 km ammonia filled pipes". The paper describes in detail how condensers, separators, pumps, pipes and receivers were replaced while maintainin the village in operation.
