Résumé

This paper describes the development of natural refrigerants in Tesco stores from small trials in 2006 through to full store trials culminating in the redesign of the refrigerants strategy and the novel roll-out solution of today. The paper details the past four years of trials and tribulations of developing an end-user ready solution for serial roll-out. The evolution of the trial systems ranges from hydrocarbon/CO2 cascade DX through hydrocarbon/CO2 cascade flooded to CO2 transcritical. The paper assesses the pitfalls and the problems associated with existing systems. Issues with these systems resulted in a delay to the development program of one year so that the new system could be designed to suit an end-user's requirements rather than a manufacturer's ideas. The paper progresses through 11 trial systems detailing the reasons why they were proposed but subsequently abandoned. A detailed description of the new transcritical solution is given. This system was designed by collaboration between an end-user and an industrial contractor to solve the various problems associated with the standard CO2 solutions on the market today. This novel system offers better energy efficiency, the thermodynamic advantages of a higher pressure system and increased resilience during power failures. The paper concludes that this system is a better route to successful rollout from an end-user's perspective.
