Résumé

The natural refrigerants carbon dioxide, ammonia and hydrocarbons are receiving greater attention from the global HVAC&R industry. Although recognized as a viable alternative to HCFCs and HFCs in various applications, a range of barriers impede wider use.

A global industry survey supported by the IIR was taken during “ATMOsphere 2010”, an international workshop. The results provided valuable data on national and international set backs as well as solutions in the following areas:

• technology and safety
• legislation and standards
• capacity building and proficiency
• markets and promotion
• funding and support
• supply and availability
• industry perception

In February 2011, following these results, a global survey among industry and policy experts was launched to clarify perceived and existing obstacles and to estimate the potential for natural refrigerants in HVAC&R applications. As of March 18, 2011, preliminary results show unequal dissemination of information on natural refrigerants in industry. Furthermore, capacity building and industry attitudes continue to create difficulties in promoting the use of non-HFC refrigerant solutions.
