Natural refrigerants in the HVAC&R industry: a study of global market and policy trends.

Résumé

The natural refrigerants carbon dioxide, ammonia and hydrocarbons are gaining increasingly more attention from the global HVAC&R industry. Although acknowledged as a viable alternative to HCFCs and HFCs in different applications, a range of barriers impede their more widespread use. In a global industry survey and during the international workshop “ATMOsphere 2010”, supported by the IIR, a range of concrete national/international barriers and solutions to these were identified, covering the areas of technology & safety, legislation & standards, training & know-how, markets & marketing, funding & support, supply & availability, as well as psychology. Building on these results, a global survey among industry and policy experts was launched in February 2011 to verify the perceived and existing barriers and quantify the potential for natural refrigerants in HVAC&R applications. Preliminary results show (status: 18 March 2011) that the information level about natural refrigerants is heavily unevenly distributed among the industry, and that training and psychology pose major barriers to a wider consideration of non-HFC refrigerant solutions.
