Résumé

The objective of the research described in this PhD thesis is to enhance secondary cooling system performance by using a fluidized bed ice slurry generator. The heat and mass transfer processes are studied in detail and the properties of the ice slurries and their behaviour in secondary cooling cycles are evaluated to determine in which application the novel ice slurry systems will be practicable. Extract from the table of contents: ice slurry fundamentals (physical properties; requirements of ice slurry properties in secondary cooling systems; freezing point depressants; ice crystals); heat transfer models of liquid/solid fluidized beds for ice slurry generation (heat transfer in fluidized bed ice slurry generators; experimental method; results and discussion); ice adhesion in a fluidized bed ice slurry generator; operating modes of the fluidized bed ice slurry generator (stationary liquid/solid fluidization; circulating fluidized bed; multiple tube system; system improvement by rotating action); optimization of the stages of an ice slurry secondary cooling cycle (stages of a secondary cooling cycle; ice slurry generation, storage and transport; utilization of heat exchangers; overview of ice slurries in secondary cooling cycles); ice slurry secondary cooling cycle simulation (model development; simulation results; other conditions; application case studies). In the appendices: primary cooling cycle: falling-film evaporation; high ice fractions: non-Newtonian rheology.
