Résumé

The author recalls the main characteristics of R134a, which has replaced R12 since 1995 in new refrigerating systems for cars: zero ozone depletion potential; necessary use of non-mineral lubricants (PAG-POE). He mentions the problems of retrofit in existing systems using R12, and the advantages of a drop-in with the R134a-R124-R600 refrigerant mixture. The thermodynamic properties of this mixture are similar to those of R12 in the relevant temperature range. The authors recommends its use in existing cars, as it offers a good compromise solution between performance and liability. In new cars, he recommends the use of R134a; the leak possibly due to high pressure on condenser side can be avoided now by using metal-plastic tubes. Flammable refrigerants (R600A) in cars should be excluded; the use of a secondary circuit with these refrigerants is not adequate, since it noticeably reduces the efficiency of the system, particularly in small or medium-capacity cars.
