Résumé

What are the key challenges that the refrigeration and air-conditioning industry are facing with respect to environmental, ecological and social sustainability? Minimizing emissions while maintaining high levels of safety and minimizing cost in order to make refrigeration technology more affordable are two main principles in this respect. Recent discussions with respect to sustainable refrigeration often only reflect the chemical formula of one essential component of the refrigeration installation: the refrigerant. This paper intends to point out that such an approach can actually be counterproductive and that only a complete optimization of the whole refrigeration system, along a detailed analysis of the specific circumstances of the different applications, will lead to success.
