Résumé

It is a thermodynamic nonsense to cool transcritical CO2 which has a critical point of 31.1°C, with air temperatures close to or higher than the critical temperature. This is realised by manufacturers of gas coolers who offer two stage air cooled gas coolers with water sprayed on the air entry face of the second stage. Another manufacturer offers a solution with ejectors which recompress some flash gas reportedly resulting in COP improvements of up to 27%. CO2 refrigerating systems may be used for both cooling and heating in commercial, industrial, AC and district heating and cooling systems, frequently in fully integrated MF2STCRSPC performing refrigeration, heating and AC. The world’s first such air cooled MF2STCRSPC has been performing six cooling plus nine heating functions in Melbourne since early 2011. The world’s first MF2STCRSPC with an EC/GC will operate subcritically in refrigeration mode all the time in a location near Sydney with a 1% ambient design condition of 36°C DB/ 24°C WB. It will operate in transcritical mode on demand. In this paper the benefits of Evaporative Condensers/Gas Coolers (EC/GCs) are examined. With evaporative condensers the cooling medium temperature is the Ambient Wet Bulb Temperature (AWBT) and not the dry bulb temperature as is the case with air cooled gas coolers.
