Résumé

The author describes 33 of these circular relics found in 17 sites in the Toshigi region. These relics, called "doko" (which translates as "digging a hole"), have an inverted breast or mortar shape seen in cross-section. They are basically circular, slightly uneven and have a small circular or square hole in the bottom. The author suggests that the doko are ancient Japanese ice rooms and estimates their historical period. Measurements to quantify the ice were carried out as well as investigations of ice supply and demand.
