Résumé
At least one of the vaccines developed in response to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic requires storage and transport at temperatures near -80 °C. The conventional means of transport in this situation is to package the vaccine with dry ice. However, dry ice has limited life. A mechanical refrigeration system can be employed to extend the life of dry ice or even eliminate the need for dry ice altogether. Standard commercial transport refrigeration systems are generally capable of providing environments down to only -40 °C. A commercial transport refrigeration system based on a cascade cycle is available that can provide -60 °C temperatures. This paper provides a systematic look at design modifications that could be made to this existing system to meet capacity requirements while providing an environment below -60 °C down toward -80 °C. System simulations using physics-based models of key components were exercised to investigate options such as refrigerant choice and cycles. The model was verified against test data.
