Opportunities for absorption refrigeration in the New Zealand meat industry.

Résumé

New Zealand meat plants could use waste heat from their rendering plants to generate refrigeration by an absorption process, thereby reducing electricity costs. Suitable refrigeration applications include water chilling, air conditioning, and refrigerant sub-cooling. The technical and economic feasibility of this possibility was investigated for a variety of plant types and rendering processes. The study found that the feasibility in possible refrigeration loads amenable to absorption chilling are small and variable. This makes absorption chillers unattractive for New Zealand meat plant applications until units of less than 150 kW capacity become available at competitive prices.
