Performances énergétiques des équipements de refroidissement des processus.

Energy performance of process cooling equipment.

Résumé

Previous studies have provided details of benchmarking methods for assessing the energy performance of cold stores. It is more difficult to apply the same techniques to process refrigeration because the loads are more variable and the causes of inefficiency are more difficult to diagnose. This paper describes various types of process load and explains the reasons behind the additional difficulties faced in benchmarking energy performance. The cases that are considered include liquid chillers, batch chillers and freezers (such as blast freezers) and flow chillers and freezers (such as spiral freezers). Although this covers a wide variety of systems, they share some common characteristics that can be exploited to enable meaningful performance information to be extracted. Modern computing techniques make more detailed analysis possible than has previously been achieved but care is required in interpreting the results, particularly when several process lines are served by a central refrigeration plant and also when the central plant is also serving a traditional cold storage warehouse. Some worked examples are given and areas requiring further development of techniques are identified.
