Résumé

Applying the powder metallurgical technique of reactive sintering, fully dense magnetocaloric bulk material based on La(Fe,Co,Si)13 was produced in kg quantities in form of die pressed blocks. After heat treatment at about 1073 K the magnetocaloric active NaZn(13) phase decomposes into phases with a strongly suppressed magnetovolume effect. In this state, the blocks can be machined by conventional techniques to the shapes required in magnetic refrigeration prototypes. After a recombination treatment at about 1323 K the magnetocaloric properties are fully recovered. The Curie temperatures were tailored to the commercial relevant range from about 250 to 340 K by substituting Co for Fe. Such materials are available to be tested in magnetic refrigeration prototypes. The production process, including the new thermally induced decomposition and recombination process, can be up-scaled to industrial levels straight forward.
