Résumé

To better promote the adoption of propane air source heat pump (ASHP), there are technical challenges that need to be addressed, one of which is the frost accumulation on outdoor units. To study the ASHP performance under frost condition, we present a Modelica-based dynamic model that accounts for the performance degradation under frost conditions. The tube-and-fin outdoor unit is modeled using the finite volume method and the sensible and latent heat transfer between refrigerant and moist air is solved using both heat and mass conservation equations. Regarding the frost accumulation, the model considers both the frost densification and thickness growth which will reduce the conductivity of the tube surface and the minimum free flow area, leading to poor air-side heat transfer. The simulation shows that the frost accumulates up to 0.23mm in 30 minutes operation which leads to a 6.25% heating capacity degradation.
