Unilever Ice Cream Supply Chain and Technology Unit has, in co-operation with Australia Haustechnik AG and the Danish Technological Institute, manufactured and tested 50 ice cream freezers using hydrocarbon (HC) as refrigerant (propane R290) and 25 standard ice cream freezers using R404A as refrigerant. Both types of freezers use the same cabinet and the same components in the refrigeration system. The only difference between the two types of freezers is the refrigerant. These 75 freezers have been field tested in Australia; first during the 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Sydney and afterwards in service stations, shops and supermarkets in Sydney and Brisbane. During the field tests, each cabinet was fitted with two temperature data loggers to record the temperature inside and outside the cabinet, as well as a power meter to record energy consumption. This article presents the results from the two field tests. Based on the two field tests, it can be concluded that the new HC freezers operate satisfactorily. Based on the measurements from the two field tests, it can furthermore be concluded that the new HC freezers use approximately 9% less energy than the standard R404A freezers.
