An experimental study on HVAC design parameters of an operating room.

Résumé

Heating ventilation and air-conditioning systems (HVAC) play an important role on the infection risk in operating rooms. Performance assessment tests in order to reveal the efficiency of the designed and constructed HVAC systems are usually applied when the operating room is at rest; however the parameters measured during the use of the operating room yield more realistic data about the sterility of space. The results of the assessment tests are generally compared with criteria recommended by standards or guidelines; however, the declared criteria may not provide the conditions which surgery team needs. In this study, temperature, relative humidity, and particle concentration in an operating room are measured continuously throughout one week with 5-minute time intervals. Moreover, the temperature and relative humidity of supply air to the operating room are also measured with 15-minute time intervals. The changes of the temperature and relative humidity in the supply air and operating room and the number of particles in the operating room are presented via diagrams. The obtained results showed that there are differences between the values of HVAC design parameters recommended by various standards and those are required by surgery team in practice. It is also found that the occupation of the operating room considerably increases particle concentration in the space.
