Résumé

The milk silo refrigeration systems on most New Zealand dairy farms currently operate using fluorocarbon refrigerants. On-farm trials were undertaken using hydrocarbons as drop-in replacements to fluorocarbon refrigerants. Compared with HCFC-22, a mixture of propane and ethane (Care-50) reduced overall energy use by about 6%, and no change in system cooling capacity was observed. The retrofit was very simple. Overall, the low retrofit cost, improved energy efficiency, low environmental impact and controllable flammability risks mean that hydrocarbons are attractive refrigerants for use on dairy farms.
