Résumé

The objective of this work was to assess the performance of hydrocarbon refrigerants as drop-in replacements for CFC-12 in the type of milk silo commonly used in New Zealand (vertical silos with refrigerated dimple pads in the floor). The system was successively charged with three refrigerants: CFC-12 and mixtures of iso-butane (R600a) and propane (R290). Converting farm refrigeration systems operating on CFC-12 to iso-butane/propane mixtures appears to be very attractive compared with alternatives such as HFC-134a or HCFC refrigerants.
