Avantages du tissu mouillé comme médium froid pour le transport de produits horticoles.

Potentials of wetted fabric as a cold medium for transport of horticultural products.

Résumé

Temperature control is necessary for maintaining the freshness and quality of horticultural products. This requires mechanical refrigeration that most low-income farmers could not afford. The present study is to evaluate the potential benefits of a low-cost cooling method by covering products with wetted fabrics that would be favourable to conserve product quality during short-distance transport. As a first approach, a laboratory-scale experiment was performed to evaluate the evaporative cooling performance of the wetted fabric. A basket loaded with vegetable (holy basil) was covered with the wetted fabric and placed in a test box where the moving air environment was simulated using a blower. Air and product temperatures and air humidity in the box were measured during the experiment. The product weight loss and visual appearance were then determined. The result demonstrated lower air and product temperature and better product quality over the case without wetted fabric.
