Résumé

By explaining the principle of cryogenic freezing and the research that is being done on topics such as closed-cycle air refrigeration, the paper emphasizes the important contribution of cryogenics to the whole field of refrigeration. It aims to show that though mechanical and cryogenic refrigeration are often competitive, they are also in many ways complementary, and that research and development performed by the cryogenic specialists is a useful contribution to refrigeration engineering.
