Résumé
Environmental concerns raised by high global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants have triggered a series of activities around the world to curtail the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). Many of the promising alternative refrigerants being investigated are flammable and fall under either A2L or A3 safety classification of ASHRAE 34. In an effort to properly address flammable refrigerants in safety standards, the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Technology Institute (AHRTI) undertook several research projects to investigate flammable refrigerants leak and ignition testing under whole scale room conditions.
This paper summarizes the results of R454C and R290 tests for a 3-doors commercial refrigerated display cases. Full-scale rooms were built for a series of tests to compare refrigerant dispersion behaviors in small-, medium- and large-size rooms. The testing simulated refrigerant leaks from the evaporator inside the display case when the refrigerated space is completely empty or 75% filled. The tests also simulated leaks from condenser outside the display case and investigated the impact of using the condenser fan circulation to disperse leaked refrigerant as a mitigation method.
R290 charge levels ranging from 150g to 500g and R454C charge levels ranging from 1100g to ~3800g were tested. Key observations will be summarized for understanding the relevant contents in the standards IEC/UL 60335-2-89.
