Current status of alternative refrigerants in Europe.

Résumé

The article reviews the alternatives being used in Europe and focuses on the developments being made in the application of natural refrigerants such as ammonia, hydrocarbons, air and carbon dioxide, which have progressed considerably as the debate on global warming intensifies. The use of hydrocarbons as refrigerants, in particular propane (R290) and CARE 50 (a blend of propane and ethane (170), as a substitute for R22 is discussed by reference to their current and potential applications in the domestic and commercial sectors.
