Résumé
This paper describes the investigation on the use of CO2 and hydrocarbons for plug-in refrigerated display cabinets. For commercial refrigeration a range of plug-in display cabinets are available on the market. On the lower capacity range, there are small glass door bottle coolers, which are similar to domestic refrigerators; R600a (isobutane) is the most common standard. On the upper capacity range, there are open Multidecks of up to 2.5 m length, which are overlapping with typical remote display cabinets. For remote systems, the natural refrigerant CO2 is replacing more and more conventional HFC refrigerants. The majority of commercial plug-in cabinets can be found in a capacity range of 600 W to 2.5 kW and are between the small domestic applications and the big remote systems. Therefore, the range of natural refrigerants from CO2 to hydrocarbons was investigated to identify the optimum solution. Thermodynamic properties of the alternative refrigerants were compared, and system efficiency was simulated. Relevant regulations were analyzed, and furthermore the availability and cost level of required components was evaluated. As a result, R290 (propane) was selected as the preferred solution for the intended Carrier product range. In a first step, the R290 technology was developed and components were qualified. Due to the flammability, the main challenges are electrical safety and the significant reduction of the refrigerant charge to maximum 150 g according to EN 60335. In a second step, a first cabinet type was transferred to R290 and launched as a series pilot product. After more than 10 million hours of field operation w/o any issues, R290 has been rolled out for a wide range of Carrier refrigerated display cabinets.
