In store fumigation with alcohol for the control of superficial scald of apples.

Résumé

Ethanol, propan-1-ol and butan-1-ol were found effective in controlling superficial scald of Granny Smith apples when placed with the apples in sealed polyethylene bags. The alcohols evaporated naturally in the bags and were absorbed by the fruit. The levels of alcohol then fell during storage. The method of control of scald appears to be due to the alcohols preventing the oxidation of a natural fruit substance alpha-farnesen to conjugated trienes. It is suggested that the process may be suitable for commercial use.
