Installation de chambres froides à CO2/propane dans un restaurant McDonald's.

Implementation of CO2/propane walk-in storage rooms in a McDonald's restaurant.

Résumé

The paper presents the results of a project converting walk-in storage rooms from R404A to R744 and R290, which reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. The project was carried out in co-operation with Findan for McDonald's Denmark. The Cleaner Product programme subsidized the project. The purpose of the project was to demonstrate that it is possible to develop a system which is safe for the local as well as the global environment and does not use more energy than a conventional R404A system. The system was built in Denmark in 2002 as part of the first HFC-free restaurant in the world. The system contains a propane/CO2 cascade system. CO2 is used in both rooms, i.e. with direct expansion in the 18 °C room and flooded evaporator with natural circulation in the 5 °C room. Laboratory tests show that the unit performs as well as or better than the conventional R404A unit.
