Résumé

Properties of hydrocarbons used as refrigerants are reviewed. Approximately 12% of the world refrigerator market is currently covered by hydrocarbons, in Europe 40%. Hydrocarbons are applied in domestic and commercial applications, but also in other sectors, although with much lower market shares. It is believed that hydrocarbon use will grow significantly, in particular for appliances and other small unit systems, in response to governments' efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emission.
