Managing genetic diversity in fish hatcheries: technologies, results and recommendations.

Résumé

The genetic management of hatchery populations needs to be a central concern in fish cultivation programmes (Tave 1993). High levels of genetic diversity exist within and among populations of most fish species and is a major determinant of a populations character, productivity and fitness, both within the hatchery environment and in the wild. The theoretical basis for managing the genetic composition of hatchery populations is now well developed (Tave 1993), based on research on fish as well as other cultured and captively maintained species. However, population genetics theory alone can only guide management actions to a point. For example, theory tells us that a large number of brood stock representative of all the spawners in a wild population needs to be selected to ensure the hatchery population contains most of the wild genetic diversity. What it can not tell us is whether the sample collected is in fact representative. This can only be ascertained from actual genetic information, an essential requirement for evaluating and monitoring the effectiveness of the actions which have been taken.
