Investigation methodology for a better knowledge of the French food retail sector.

Résumé

The French food retail sector represents about 6% of the total French electricity consumption. The electricity dedicated to the refrigeration can reach 60% of the total electricity consumption of a supermarket. Data about energy, fluids, display cabinets may be hard to find and are often outdated. Electricité de France (EDF), which is the main electricity provider in France, needs such data in order to develop new energy services aiming at improving energy efficiency and demand-response. EDF and MF Conseil conducted an investigation, made of interviews, on-site visits and calculations. The article presents the methodology used to collect the information as well as the calculations which allow to have an image of the average energy consumption, type of fluids and type of display cabinets for each category of store. The methodology alone is presented. For confidential reasons, full survey results are not available and only examples are shown.
