Résumé

The structure and thermal properties of ice are discussed in special reference to the freezing process of water. Nucleation of ice is required before ice growth. In supercooled water dendritic ice growth takes place, but in normal cooling of water in pipes and lakes, growth rate is controlled by conduction through ice. On the other hand, icicle growth proceeds through the following three mechanisms: dendritic growth at the tip forming a thin ice pipe, slower growth at the wall, and the subsequent growth of water captured at the centre of an icicle.
