Système à accumulation de glace pour le refroidissement du lait à la ferme.

An ice bank for on-farm milk cooling.

Résumé

Milk cooling at milking times frequently imposes a major short-term load on local power distribution systems. One method of alleviating this load is to accumulate cooling capacity on the farm over a long period for intensive short-term use. This can be done compactly and conveniently using the latent heat of fusion of water ice as the storage medium. Ice banks are usually constructed using tubular structures on which the ice is formed on evaporator tubes of a refrigeration system. This paper describes a novel structure of ice bank using the "heat-pipe" effect to create a flat-plate ice bank in which the heat transfer area remained constant during freezing and melting so much more consistent temperature control is obtained. The expected performance has been computer modelled and a prototype ice bank has been built and studied in both freezing and melting modes. The flat plate ice bank displays more consistent melting rates and hence better temperature control.
