Résumé
During 2011 the compressors of a number of refrigerated shipping containers inexplicably exploded with the loss of life. It was subsequently concluded that the cause of the explosions was counterfeit refrigerant that contained methyl chloride rather than a pure charge of the intended refrigerant HFC-134a. This paper documents the ongoing investigation and describes the complex chemistry occurring within the refrigerant circuit that most likely caused the explosions and the methods proposed to eliminate the problem.
