Résumé

A freezing process of water inside an elongated elliptical enclosure is numerically studied. The finite element method is used to simulate the freezing process on a fixed grid scheme. The latent heat effect is simulated using the apparent capacity method, and the natural convection flow of water during the freezing is considered. Calculations are made for the rate of change of average water temperature and required time for freezing, for difference initial temperatures of water, and ellipse's aspect ratios. The results indicate that freezing time is considerably decreased with increasing the aspect ratio of the ellipse, and therefore, the aspect ratio can be used to control the freezing process inside pipes. High resolution capturing of the solid/liquid moving interface and the details of temperature distribution are presented.
