Résumé

Biodegradable packaging reduces the environmental impact of packaging waste, which supports sustainability. Moreover, enhancing the active function of polymers possibly reduces quality deterioration of chilled food products along the cold chain. This research presents the development of sustainable packaging based on biodegradable polyester blended with thermoplastic starch incorporating functional substances via extrusion. Addition of active substances including food preservatives modified the morphology of film materials. In most cases, hydrophilic-hydrophobic properties of the films majorly affect permeation of water vapor and oxygen. Films containing propionate derivatives effectively preserved cheese, reduced mold growth and food loss in cold chain storage of cheese. Efficiency of the films has also been tested in cold chain logistics, which showed inhibition of microbial growth and quality preservation of packaged cheese. Accordingly, applications of biodegradable packaging with enhancing antimicrobial functions effectively reduces food loss and waste by limiting microbial growth and quality preservation of chilled foods.
