Summary
Based on a review of over 800 papers, the authors estimate that between 17.9 and 39.5 million tons (average 27.0 million) of fish are discarded each year in commercial fisheries. Extract from the table of contents: estimates of global fishery bycatch and discards; bycatch and discard impacts (biological, ecological, economic and socio-cultural); case studies; policy, solutions and conclusions. A diskette with the complete bycatch database, which was compiled for the study is also included.
