A mathematical modelling of a centrifugal compressor based on compression principle and performance data.

Author(s) : CHEN Q., SHI W., WANG B., et al.

Summary

In the paper, a new gray box steady state model of single stage centrifugal compressor is developed based on the compression principle. The simulated compressor controls its capacity by the motor speed and the angle of inlet guide valve. The model is drawn from turbo machine's velocity triangle and includes some parameters which are used to describe the geometric character of compressor and states of refrigerant. The relationship between some defined parameters and angle of inlet guide valve is gained by fitting the chiller's performance data from the manufacturers. The model is validated with the experimental data and can predict the shaft power and mass flow rate of the compressor within 10% error for the majority of operating conditions. This model can not only be put into a chiller's model to simulate the chiller's performance but also be a tool to analyze the chiller's control strategies to improve its efficiency.
