Summary

To increase the capacity of refrigeration systems it is suggested that a separate refrigeration system, which is provided to cool the refrigerant liquid between the condenser and expansion valve has some merit. The system is suited to plants which experience variable cooling demands and rarely operate at full capacity; it can be retrofitted to existing systems or incorporated into new designs. The main function of the capacity booster is to enable a more moderately sized main plant to function at a higher average capacity and therefore at a higher year round COP. For air conditioning in the United Kingdom's varied and temperate climate the system is shown to have important advantages.
