Summary

TORE SUPRA IS A TOKAMAK LOCATED IN THE CENTRE D'ETUDES NUCLEAIRES DE CADARACHE ON BEHALF OF THE ASSOCIATION EURATOM -CEA, IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE PROGRAMME OF RESEARCH OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY ON CONTROLLED FUSION. IT IS A MACHINE WHOSE TECHNOLOGY HAS TO SOLVE ALL THE PROBLEMS RELATED TO THE DEVELOPMENT AND INSTALLATION OF SUPERCONDUCTING WINDINGS AND TO THE ASSOCIATED CRYOGENIC SYSTEM. TORE SUPRA WILL MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO ACQUIRE SIGNIFICANT EXPERIENCE FOR THE PREPARATION OF THE FOLLOWING GENERATION OF MACHINES FOR PLASMA PHYSICS AND CONTROLLED FUSION. IT HAS BEEN SPECIALLY DESIGNED TO FACILITATE A LARGE PROGRAMME IN PHYSICS. USING SUPERCONDUCTING WINDINGS MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO STUDY THE MAGNETIC CONFINEMENT AND THE STABILITY DURING LONG IMPULSES (IN EXCESS OF 30 SECONDS), THE INFLUENCE OF IMPURITIES AND THE EFFICIENCY OF THE ADDITIONAL HEATING SOURCES. THE PECULIAR REQUIREMENTSOF THE TOKAMAKS CONCERNING THE SUPERCONDUCTING WINDINGS OF THE FUTURE MACHINES, ARE RECALLED.
